The truck is on the shoulder with the hazard lights going, and nothing is wrong with the truck.
He came off at exit forty-one an hour and ten short of the yard, and he pulled the wheel right without deciding to, and now the engine is off and he is sitting with both hands still on it. Tick. Tick. Tick. Out past the mirror the light is going down orange over a soybean field and a row of power poles, and cars go by at seventy and rock the cab a little each time one passes.
Four calls since Tulsa. That is what did it, if anything did.
His mother first, about the appointment Thursday and whether he could run her over there, and he said yes before he had the calendar in front of him, because the yes is faster than the calendar. Then his daughter, nineteen, crying about a thing that was not really the thing, and he stayed level and asked the two questions that let her get down to the real one, and by the end she was fine. Then his brother, wanting to talk about their mother's house and whether they sell it, and he said let us not decide that tonight, in the voice he keeps for exactly that. Then his wife at four o'clock, not asking for anything, just tired, and he made her laugh, because that is what he does.
Four calls, and in every one of them he was the calm one.
He is good at it, and has been since he was about eleven years old. There is a particular flatness he can put in his voice that makes a room settle, and he can do it while running eighty thousand pounds down a wet road with the wipers going, and every person who called him today hung up steadier than they picked up. It is only that the flatness costs something, and nobody has ever asked him what, and he has never had a place to set the bill down.
So he is on the shoulder an hour short, and he cannot make himself put the key back.
Not a breakdown. Not tears. Just a man sitting still with his hands on the wheel, watching the flashers throw amber on the gravel, finding that the thing he has stood on all day is his own voice, and that his own voice has been talking since Tulsa, and that there is nothing under it.
You know that shoulder. It may be a car in a parking lot with the engine off, or the last ten minutes in the driveway before you go in. Wherever yours is, you go there because it is the only place all day where nobody needs you to be level, and you have never once said out loud what you go there for.
I am not going to tell you to be less available to those four people. I want to tell you what is actually under you while you take the calls.
The word under that verse is a thing you lean on
Let me put one line of Scripture in front of you and read it the slow way, because the slow way is where it lives.
They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the Lord was my support.Psalm 18:18
David wrote that after the worst stretch of his life, and I want you to look at the last word rather than the first half. The Hebrew behind support is mish'an. It is not a feeling and it is not a mood. It is a physical noun. A prop, a staff, the thing a man puts his weight on so his own legs do not have to take all of it. That is the picture. Not encouragement. A brace.
So the sentence is not saying the Lord admired David's composure. It is saying David put his weight down and the Lord took it.
You are leaning on something that does not get tired, and it was under you before you ever pulled over. I am not offering that as a nice thought to carry. It is what is written in Psalm 18:18, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a written line about a prop and makes it an actual floor under a man in a cab at dusk. Your voice has been holding your mother and your daughter and your brother and your wife all day. Something else has been holding your voice.
Now hear the difference, because it is the whole thing. Being leaned on is what a good man is for. Being the ground is what God is for. You have spent thirty years doing the first while believing you were doing the second, and that gap is not a character flaw. It is the entire weight of your tiredness, and it has a name now.
You have a brace under you tonight that is not the sound of your own steady voice. His word calls Him the stay of the man in the day of calamity, and His Spirit is the One who moves that from a page into a set of shoulders. The flatness in your voice is a gift you carry, not a foundation you are. Footings are poured, not performed, and yours was poured by somebody else.
The calm one and the strong one are not the same man
I build things, so let me speak in the trade for a minute.
There is a difference between a wall and a footing. People lean on a wall all day long, and that is exactly what a wall is for, and a wall that gets leaned on is not being abused, it is being used correctly. A footing is a different animal. A footing carries the whole dead weight of the structure straight down into ground that was surveyed before anybody poured anything. Hand a wall the footing's job and it will hold for years, and it will hold beautifully, and then one evening it will not, and everybody will be surprised except the wall.
You have been the wall. You are a very good wall. And somewhere back around age eleven, in a house that needed one, you took on the footing's job as well, and you have been carrying a load that was never rated to your section.
You were never the footing under those four phone calls. Psalm 18:18 says the Lord was the support, and it does not say He was the support of the crisis while a man supported himself. His Spirit has been under all five of you on that highway today, and the ground did not change when you got tired. It was never your legs. It was His.
Look at what the psalm actually credits. They confronted me. David does not pretend the day was not a day, and he does not spiritualize the ambush. He says plainly that it came at him, and in the same breath he names what he leaned on. That is not a man reporting his own resilience. That is a man naming his prop. Every single time, the honor goes to the One who was the stay.
And I want to be careful with you here, because I know what your mind will do with this. It will hear lean on the Lord and translate it into so take fewer calls. That is not what I am saying and it is not what the text says. Your mother still has Thursday. Nobody in your life needs you less tonight than they did this morning. What changes is not who leans on you. What changes is what you are leaning on while they do.
You are held right now, in this cab, with the engine off, and the holding is not something you have to keep up. It is written that He was the stay in the day of calamity, and the Holy Spirit is the One doing the actual bearing, not your back and not your voice. Nothing here asks you to produce one more ounce of anything tonight.
Here is the transfer, and it is not a technique and it is not a resolution.
For thirty years the load has run one direction. Four people onto you, and you onto your own voice, and your own voice onto nothing at all. Tonight the second half of that changes, and only the second half. They still call. What changes is that underneath you, where there has been a wheel and a windshield and a habit that started when you were eleven, there is a Person, and He has been the stay of this whole day, and He is not tired at the end of it.
I will not tell you what the last hour of this drive will feel like. A man who promises you the feeling is selling you something. What I will tell you is what has been settled.
You are propped by the Lord Himself for the next hour, and that much is already done. Not for the whole road. Not for Thursday, and not for the conversation about your mother's house. For the hour between this shoulder and that yard, His word says He is the stay, and His Spirit is the One who applies it to a particular man in a particular cab at a particular mile marker. That hour is covered. Take it, and leave the rest of the road exactly where it is.
Declare this over yourself
Say these three out loud in the cab, hands still open, and let me tell you why you have the right to. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Jesus gave His own people the standing to speak to a thing that stands in their way. That standing is not a reward for a strong day. It is yours because of where you are, which is in Him. And the thing you are speaking to is not your mother and it is not your daughter; I would never have you command a person you love. It is the belief that the calm one is not allowed to stop. What the rest of the road holds is His, His timing is His own, and you leave the outcome with Him. Where your weight goes for the next hour is not in question.
- Shoulder of the highway with the flashers on, you are not the end of my strength, because my strength was never the thing holding this up. Scripture says the Lord was my stay in the day of calamity, and He is the one holding it up.
- Belief that the calm one cannot stop, you were poured into an eleven year old boy and you were never a footing, and in the name of Jesus you come out from under me. His word gives the day of calamity a support that is not my own voice, and I am leaning my whole weight on Him now.
- Lord, You are the prop under this cab and under every call I took today, and You are not tired at the end of it. You are the stay of the man in the day of calamity, and tonight that man is me, and my hands are open and I am taking the next hour from You.
