The side room off the platform has one chair in it, a coat hook, a stack of folded music stands, and a glass of water somebody has put on the windowsill for her, which is kind, and which she has not touched. Through the wall the band is running the last chorus again. Twenty minutes until the doors.
She has the card in her hand with three words on it, which is all she has ever needed, because after four hundred Sundays the three words are enough to open the whole thing up. She reads them. They are just ink. She reads them again and they are still just ink, and the part of her that usually rises up somewhere around the second reading, the part she has never had to send for, the part that has always simply arrived, is not in the building.
She is not frightened. That is the strange thing. She is level and calm and she can feel her own pulse in her thumb, and there is simply nothing there. Not doubt. Not dryness in the way people mean it in books. An empty tank, and a clock, and a stack of music stands, and a glass of water she cannot make herself pick up.
She runs the checks she has learned to run. She slept. She ate something at seven. Nothing happened this week that she can point at, which is somehow worse, because if something had happened there would be a reason and reasons can be managed. She thinks about the row of faces that will be out there in nineteen minutes, and she loves them, and that is not in question either, and none of it puts anything in the tank.
Then she does the thing she has done for years without ever once calling it what it is. She starts to manufacture. She thinks of the thing that usually moves her and turns it over until it moves her a little. She lifts her own chin. She breathes the way she was taught to breathe in a course she went on. She hums the top note of the last chorus to see whether the humming will start the engine. And underneath all of it, quietly, the sentence she would never say out loud is running: if I cannot make this, then everything anybody has ever received through me was me making it, and none of it was ever Him.
Eighteen minutes. She sits down on the one chair. The band stops and starts again.
You know that room, and it may not have a platform anywhere near it. It might be a car in a school pickup line with four minutes left before you have to walk in and be somebody's mother. It might be a hallway outside a room where a hard conversation is waiting for you. You know exactly what it is to have to go in there with nothing in you and to stand there trying to manufacture something so that nobody finds out. I am not going to ask you to find it. I want to tell you what the actual arrangement is, because it is not the one you have been operating.
The most quoted verse about strength is not about topping you up
You know the verse. It has been on a mug, a bookmark, a gym wall and a leaving card, and being worn that smooth has cost it almost everything.
but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.Isaiah 40:31
Everybody reads renew as refill. Top up the tank. Get the level back to where it was on a good Sunday. And that reading turns the verse into a promise about your capacity, which is why it has been quoted at exhausted people for a hundred years with almost no effect at all.
The Hebrew word under renew is the ordinary word for exchange. It is what you do with a garment when you change your clothes. Not the same coat mended, but this coat off and that coat on. So the sentence is not saying that waiting on God improves your strength. It is saying that waiting on God is where your strength and His change places.
Which means the tank being empty is not the obstacle to the exchange. You are standing in exactly the position the promise is written for. That is what Isaiah 40:31 says, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a line polished smooth on a hundred bookmarks and makes it operative in a side room with eighteen minutes left on the clock. An exchange needs somebody with empty hands. You have those.
Look at the verses just before it, because Isaiah is not being poetic, he is being precise. He says that even the young men shall faint and be weary, and the picked ones, the ones built for it, shall utterly fall. The whole passage is written to take the option of self-generated strength off the table before it offers the alternative. It is not a poster about eagles. It is an accounting.
You are the one Isaiah is writing to, and not the exception he is warning about. That is the written word in the three verses that end Isaiah 40, and the Holy Spirit is the One who puts a passage addressed to a whole worn out nation into one chair in one side room. The falling is inside the text. It is not a footnote about the people who did it wrong.
Nothing in the tank is not a verdict on you
Now let me deal with the sentence running underneath, because it is doing more damage than the emptiness is.
If I cannot make this, then it was always me making it. That sentence has a hook in it, and the hook is the word making. You have been quietly convinced that the thing that happens when you are full is something you produce, and therefore the thing that does not happen when you are empty is something you failed to produce. Both halves are wrong, and the second half is the cruel one.
You were never the source, and you are not the source this morning either. It is written that He gives power to the faint and to him who has no might He increases strength, in the two verses above your verse, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been the actual engine of every single one of those four hundred Sundays. What arrived through you on the full mornings was His. What is missing this morning was never yours to have in stock.
I want to be careful here, because there is a version of this teaching that turns weakness into a strategy, and I will not hand you that. I am not telling you emptiness is good for you. I am not going to congratulate you on running out, and I am certainly not going to suggest you would benefit from more of it. Being empty is not a virtue and it is not a lesson. It is a fact about this morning, and it is being met rather than marked.
And notice what this does not require of you. It does not require you to feel anything before the doors open. It does not require you to work up the thing you cannot work up. There is no reading, no breathing exercise, no top note to hum. You have a Helper in that side room who is not waiting for you to arrive at a level. Scripture says the Lord gives power to the faint, and the Holy Spirit does not stand outside the door of an empty person waiting for the tank to show a quarter before He comes in.
Here is the exchange, and it is not a technique, and it takes about four seconds.
You have been trying to convert empty into full so that you can go and do the thing. That conversion was never available to you and it is not your job. What is available is a swap: you hand Him the nothing, out loud, in plain words, and you take His strength for the next hour. Not for the year. Not for the season. For the hour that is about to happen, which is the only one on offer, and which is the only one you need.
You have His strength for this next hour, and it is already yours before you feel a thing. Isaiah 40:31 calls it an exchange and the Holy Spirit is the One who does the exchanging, and He is not slow and He does not require a signature. What you feel while it happens is not the meter. Four hundred Sundays have already taught you that the two do not run together, though you have read that the wrong way round for years.
I am not going to tell you what the next hour is like. I do not know, and I would not promise you the feeling, because the feeling is His to give and it is not the point. What I can hand you is what is already settled: the strength that is going into that room is His, it was always His, and it does not run out at the place where you do.
Declare this over yourself
Say these three out loud in the side room, and let me tell you why you may. The authority to speak to what stands in your way is real and it is operative now, and it is yours personally, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Jesus said a word spoken to the mountain is what moves it. Spoken. Not managed quietly behind a calm face. The mountain here is not the people waiting out there, whom I would never have you command. It is the verdict that an empty tank means an unfaithful person, and you have every right in His name to speak to that. It is written that He gives power to the faint, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes those words live in you, not the reserves you cannot find. How the next hour goes and what anybody feels in it is His to decide, His timing is His own, and you leave the outcome with Him. Whose strength walks through that door is not in question.
- Side room with twenty minutes left, you are not the measure of what I have. Scripture says those who wait on the Lord exchange their strength for His, and an exchange is made with empty hands, which is exactly what I am holding.
- Verdict that empty means unfaithful, you have run underneath four hundred Sundays and you have no ground under you, and in the name of Jesus you leave this room. God's word says He gives power to the faint, and His Spirit has been the engine of every morning I thought I was making.
- Lord, You are the God who gives power to the faint, and I am the one with nothing in the tank this morning. I thank You that You never asked me to arrive full, and I am drinking this water and taking Your strength for the next hour.
