Strength For TodayMark 6:31

Everything Canceled by Nine

This message is for to be met on a day he canceled everything by nine and then lay there working out what kind of man does that

The third message goes at four minutes past nine and then Owen puts the phone face up on the covers and does not move.

The first one went to the site at twenty to eight, which was the only one with any dignity in it, because a man can be ill and everybody understands ill. The second went to his daughter, who had asked him weeks ago to come for lunch and had reminded him twice, and he wrote something about the van and then deleted it and wrote something about not being great today and sent that instead. The third went to Marcus about the airport run, and Marcus will get someone else, and it is fine, and it is not fine, and both of those are true at once.

So it is four minutes past nine and the whole day is empty.

The light in this room at this hour is a particular kind of light. Nobody who leaves the house at seven ever sees it. It comes in flat across the top of the wardrobe and picks out the dust on the shelf and makes the whole room look like a place where something is supposed to be happening. Downstairs the boiler clicks. A car door goes somewhere along the road. The world is getting on with its Tuesday and Owen is lying in it with the covers pushed down and his phone face up beside his hand.

He is not asleep. That is the thing about a morning like this. He is not asleep and he is not resting and he is not doing anything, he is just present, in a bed, at nine in the morning, on a day he has already given away.

And after about twenty minutes the other thing starts, which is the accounting.

It does not arrive as feelings. It arrives as a question, phrased almost politely, and it is: what kind of man does that. Cancels his daughter. Cancels a favor he offered himself. Lies here in the light off the top of the wardrobe while other men his age are on scaffolding. And then the question stops being a question and becomes a list, and the list is not about today at all, it goes back years, and it has a shape, and the shape is that this is what he is like now.

He thinks about getting up and does not. Not out of defiance. There is simply nothing to lift with.

At some point he turns his head and looks at the phone, and the screen has gone dark, and he can see the ceiling reflected in it.

Who He said it to

The sentence in Mark 6 is not said to slackers, and everything about it depends on that.

The disciples have just come back in from being sent out. They have been preaching. They have been laying hands on the sick and seeing things happen. They gather round Jesus and report everything they have done and everything they have taught, which is the report of men who have been fruitful, and the chapter says there were so many people coming and going that they did not even have time to eat.

That is the moment. Full hands, real results, and no time to eat. And into that, this:

And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.Mark 6:31

He does not ask them for one more push. He does not tell them the harvest is plentiful and the laborers are few, though He has said that elsewhere and it is true. He looks at men in the middle of good work and pulls them out of it, on purpose, and the reason He gives is that they have not eaten.

Sit with how ordinary the reason is. Not a vision. Not a crisis of the soul. They have not eaten and there are too many people. You are looked at by the same eyes that noticed men had missed lunch. The written word records Him interrupting successful ministry over a meal, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a detail that small and lays it over a Tuesday morning where somebody could not get up.

And while this is being said plainly, one more plain thing belongs here. If this has been most mornings for weeks rather than this one morning, please tell your doctor about it. That is not a spiritual failure and going is not a retreat, and nothing in Mark 6 is asking anyone to choose between rest and the care that is already in their hands. You are not being asked to sort this out on your own, and you never were. Scripture puts Jesus in the business of noticing bodies, and the Holy Spirit is not offended by a person who needs more help than a page of writing can give.

The nine o'clock courtroom

The trouble with the accounting is not that it is harsh. It is that it is fast, and it is dressed as fairness.

It does not say Owen is a bad man. It is far too clever for that. It asks a reasonable sounding question, what kind of man does that, and then it supplies the answer in the tone of somebody just being honest, and by half past nine there is a verdict lying on the bed alongside him that he did not notice being handed down.

And the verdict is doing something specific. It is taking a day, one day, which is a small unit of time, and turning it into a description of a person. The lunch he called off stops being one missed lunch and becomes evidence of a character. That is the move, and it happens so smoothly that nobody in the room objects to it.

You are not the sum of a morning, and no true verdict about you was reached at nine o'clock today. The written word calls Him the one who knows our frame and remembers that we are dust, which is a tender sentence and not a disappointed one, and the Holy Spirit does not run a courtroom over a man in his own bed.

There is no reading of Mark 6:31 in which the disciples are being scolded on the way out to the boat. Nobody follows them to the desert place to establish what kind of men need a break. You were called aside by someone who did the calling Himself. Scripture has the invitation coming out of Jesus's own mouth, unprompted, and the Holy Spirit says it in this room in the same voice He said it in on that shore.

The breakthrough

So here is what is actually available at nine o'clock, and it is smaller and better than a plan.

Not the day back. The day is gone and the messages are sent and no part of this is about undoing that. Not a strategy for tomorrow either, because tomorrow is not being discussed and does not need to be. What is here is today, which is one day, and He is in it.

You have today, and today is already covered. The written word puts the invitation to rest into the mouth of Jesus Himself, and the Holy Spirit is the One who carries it off the page and into a bedroom where nothing is going to be achieved.

There is nothing to work up. There is no better posture to get into first. A man lying still with his palms open on the covers is in exactly the position the disciples were in when they got into the boat, which was tired, unproductive and going somewhere quiet at His suggestion. You are inside His sentence and not outside it. Scripture says come apart and rest a while, and the Holy Spirit is not standing at the end of the bed waiting for the day to be salvaged before He comes any closer.

The accounting will start up again. It usually does around the middle of the afternoon. When it does, the answer is not a better argument about what kind of man Owen is. The answer is that the question was never his to settle, and it has already been settled by somebody else, and He settled it in his favor a long time before this Tuesday.

Declare this over yourself

These are not a way of talking yourself out of bed. The authority in them is Christ's, and because you are in Christ it has been given to you to use, the way an ambassador says words he did not write. Scripture is what they stand on and the Holy Spirit is what carries them. Nothing here puts a clock on God; the outcome is His and He answers in His own way. Say them lying down.

  1. Three messages sent before nine, you are cancellations and not a verdict. Mark 6:31 has Jesus telling working men to come apart and rest a while, and this morning sits inside that sentence. This bed is where I am being met, and I am being met here now.
  2. Conclusion I reached at nine this morning, you have no standing in this room. In the name of Jesus you are off this bed, and the question about what kind of man cancels his day goes out with you. Jesus called working men aside to rest, and He is calling me in the same voice.
  3. Lord, You are the one who said come apart and rest a while, and I am lying here inside Your word instead of inside my own courtroom. Your Spirit is holding today together while I do not. I am resting now.
