Somebody Under Each Arm

They came at seven to drop off a dish and it is twenty-five past nine and neither of them has picked up a coat.

There are three mugs on the low table. Two of them are empty. The third is hers and it has a skin on it, because she made it and then got up twice, once to find the thing Priya was asking about and once because she heard the dryer, and she has not sat still long enough to drink anything since Tuesday.

The lamp in the corner is the only light on. Somebody put it on at some point, and it was not her.

They have been saying the same thing in six different ways for two hours, and she has been answering it in six different ways for two hours, and the answer is always some version of honestly, I'm fine. She has said it to her sister. She has said it to the woman at the pharmacy. She said it on Thursday to somebody who did not even ask, which she noticed at the time and filed away and has not thought about since.

Then Nadia takes the cold mug out of her hands, not roughly, and puts it down on the table, and says, "We're not going anywhere tonight. So you might as well stop."

And she laughs, because that is what you do, and then she does not have a second sentence.

Here is what nobody in that room can see. It is not that she does not want them. She loves both of them. It is that she has been the one on the other side of this for eleven years. She is the one who arrives with the dish. She is the one who stays till half nine while somebody else falls apart, and she is very good at it, and it has never once cost her anything to be that person, because being that person is where she knows exactly who she is.

She does not know who she is in this chair. If she says the true sentence, if she lets these two sit here and hold her up through a week she has told everybody is fine, something changes about her position in every friendship in her life, and she cannot picture what she looks like on the other side of it. That is not pride. It kept four people fed through a decade. It is just that she has never been in this seat and there is no map.

Twenty-eight past nine. The lamp. Three mugs. Two women with their coats still on the hook, waiting, in no hurry at all.

I am not going to tell you that you should have let people in years ago, because that would be a charge and this is not a courtroom. And I am not going to promise you there will always be two of them in the room, because I do not know your house. I want to show you the order these things happen in, because it is the order that decides whether being helped costs you anything.

The stone came first

There is a scene people quote in half, and the half that gets left out is the half you need tonight.

But Moses' hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.Exodus 17:12

Everybody remembers the two men. Almost nobody remembers what they did first. Before either of them lifted an arm, they put a stone under him and he sat down. The seat came before the shoulders. Whatever else was going to hold Moses that afternoon, the first thing under him was not a person.

That is not a small detail. It is the order that keeps this from becoming a story about dependence. He was not propped up by his two closest men on a hillside with nothing underneath him. He was seated on something solid, and the men came in beside what was already holding him.

You have a stone under you, and it was put there before either of them showed up with a dish. That is what is written in Exodus 17:12, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a hillside from a very old book and lays it under a woman in a front room at twenty-eight past nine.

So here is what Nadia and Priya are actually doing, and it is not what you are afraid it is. They are not the ground. They are two people who came in beside the ground. Nothing about your life is being transferred into their hands tonight, and no position of yours is being handed over, because the load was never theirs to hold and it was never yours either.

You are not losing anything when two people hold your arms up. The written account has Moses seated on God's provision the whole time, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes that a present tense fact in a chair with a lamp on in the corner.

Until the going down of the sun

Now look at the size of it, because Exodus is careful about that too.

His hands were steady until the going down of the sun. Not for the rest of his life. Not permanently. For one afternoon, on one hill, until it got dark. That is the whole span the text claims, and it is exactly the span you have been afraid of, because what you are actually resisting is not tonight. It is the idea that if you let them do this once, this is who you are now, permanently, the one who needs holding.

The text does not say that. Aaron and Hur did not become Moses' arms. He walked down that hill himself. The help had a beginning and an end and a sunset in it, and he was the same man at the bottom of the hill as he was at the top.

You were held up for one evening, which is the only size this was ever cut to. Exodus 17:12 puts the going down of the sun on it, and the Holy Spirit brings what is needed to the evening in front of you rather than to a version of you that lasts forever.

And I want to say the other thing plainly, because a message like this can quietly assume a house full of people, and plenty of houses are not. There may be an evening when there is no Nadia and no Priya, when it is one lamp and no coats on the hook at all. On that evening the stone is still under you. It was the first thing in the verse and it is the thing that does not depend on anybody's schedule. Aaron and Hur were a mercy. They were never the foundation, which is exactly why their absence would not remove one.

You are carried without being diminished, and that is the only kind of carrying God does. It is written that they seated him first and steadied him second, and the Holy Spirit is the One who holds a person up in a way that hands them back to themselves rather than taking something from them.
