The Shift He Cannot Turn Down

At ten to six the loading bay was still cold and the sun was coming up behind the fence in a long orange line that got into everything.

Tomás sat on the step with his back against the roller door and the thermos between his boots. He had poured the coffee already and had not drunk any of it. Steam came off it and went sideways in the air and disappeared, and he watched that happen four or five times without doing anything about it.

He had been awake since four. Not up since four. Awake since four, which is a different thing and a worse one, because the last two hours had been spent lying still in the dark doing arithmetic he already knew the answer to.

The board inside said he was on a double. Six until two, and then two until ten, because Marcos had gone and there was nobody else on the list and the manager had asked him in that way managers ask when they already know. He had said yes. He had said yes before the sentence was finished, actually, which is a habit and not a decision.

There was a good reason for the yes and the reason was not complicated. The rent had gone up in March. His daughter needed the trip money by Friday and had asked so carefully, so apologetically, that it had put a small hole in his chest that had not closed since. Sixteen hours pays for the trip and most of the difference on the rent. That is the whole arithmetic. It is not a moral failure and it is not bad planning. It is just what the numbers say.

So the shift is not the problem. The shift is a fact, like the fence and the orange light.

The problem was sitting on the step at ten to six holding a cup of coffee he had not drunk, and knowing, in the specific way a body knows, that there was nothing in him to spend. Not tired. He knew tired. Tired is Thursday afternoon. This was something further along than that, where you go to reach for the thing you normally reach for and your hand comes back with nothing in it.

He turned the cup around in his hands a couple of times.

A gull went over the fence, low, complaining about something.

And Tomás thought, and did not say it, because there was nobody in the yard to say it to: I do not know how I am going to do this, and I have to do this, and both of those are true at the same time, and nobody has ever explained to me what a man does with that.

The alarm on his phone went off at four minutes to. He turned it off. He drank the coffee, which had gone from too hot to nearly cold without ever passing through right, and he screwed the lid back on the thermos and set it on the crate for later.

Then he sat there for three more minutes with his hands on his knees, in the orange light, before he stood up.

Six verses before the poster

Psalm 28:7 is on a lot of walls. It is on mugs and phone screens and the back of church bulletins, usually in a nice italic, usually on its own.

Go and read what is in front of it.

Verse one: David is calling out to God and saying, do not be silent to me, because if you are silent I become like the ones who go down into the pit. That is a man saying, if You do not answer I am finished. Verse two: hear the voice of my supplications when I cry unto thee. Verse three, four, five: a man surrounded by people working against him and asking God to deal with it, because he cannot. There are six verses of a man at the end of himself before anybody gets to the line that ends up in the nice italic.

That matters this morning, on that step, more than almost anything else I could tell you. The verse was not written by a man who had it together. It was written by a man who had run out, out loud, in writing, and did not tidy it up afterwards.

So it is not a slogan. It is not a thing to say to yourself harder until it works. You are not being asked to generate the strength that verse is talking about, and you were never the source of it. That is what is written into the shape of Psalm 28 itself, six verses of empty and then one verse of supply, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes an order like that and makes it land on a man on a step instead of hanging on a wall.

The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.Psalm 28:7

You have a strength in front of you this morning that is not made out of anything you have got left. The written word says the Lord is the strength, not the coach and not the standard, and the Holy Spirit is the One who brings it into a body at the hour the body needs it rather than the night before, when you could have counted it and felt better.

Strength is a Person, not a tank

Here is where a lot of tired people get quietly hurt, and I want to take it apart carefully.

Somewhere along the way, strength in church language turned into a substance. A quantity. Something you have more or less of, that runs down like a battery and gets topped up if you do the right things, so that a man with nothing left in the yard concludes he has been managing his own supply badly. Under that idea, being empty is a report card.

That is not what the psalm says. The psalm does not say the Lord gives me strength as a substance to be stored. It says the Lord is my strength. It is a Person, present tense, in the sentence. And you cannot store a Person. You can only be with one.

Which changes everything about the next sixteen hours, because it means the question is not how much have I got. The question is who is here. And He does not arrive because you rallied. He is not waiting behind a turnstile you have to force with the last of your energy, which would be a cruel design and is not the design.

You are not empty in front of God, because the strength in that verse is His and He is not divided into portions. Scripture says He is the strength and the shield in the same breath, and His Spirit is the One who makes a written line into supply inside a working body.

And I want to say the other half of this plainly, because it is where this teaching gets twisted into something ugly. Nothing about your emptiness is useful. God is not asking you to like it, to lean into it, or to want more of it so there is more room for Him. That is a sermon trick and it does damage to people who are genuinely running on nothing. Your emptiness is not a spiritual technique and it is not a qualification. It is simply the true condition of a man who has been awake since four, and it does not disqualify you from anything at all.

You were never required to arrive full. The written word records David arriving with nothing but a voice and a complaint, His Spirit met him there and not at some better version of him, and the same thing is true on a step in a loading bay at four minutes to six.
