The Thing Nobody in That Building Knows

This message is for to be known by God in the one thing she has never told a single person in that building, and to find it did not cost her His welcome

The urn is still on. It has been on since half past six and it is doing the thing it does when it is nearly empty, a low irregular knocking somewhere inside, and the little window down the side has fogged over so you cannot see the level any more.

She is washing cups that are, if she is honest about it, already clean. She rinsed them once. She is rinsing them again because her hands are in the water and the water is warm and there is a rhythm to it.

Through the hatch she can hear the room. Somebody telling a story with three false starts. A chair leg going over the tiles. That particular laugh that goes up at the end, which belongs to a woman she has known for nine years and would trust with her house keys.

A head comes round the door frame. "You are an absolute star. Do you want a hand?"

"I am good, thanks. Nearly done."

The head goes. She has said I am good, thanks in this kitchen more times than she could count, and she has meant it, mostly, and she has never once said anything else.

The kitchen is where she goes. Not to hide, exactly. It is only that in a kitchen there is something to do with your hands, and nobody sits down opposite you in a kitchen, and if a conversation gets close to something you can turn to the sink and be busy without anybody thinking you were rude.

Nine years in this building. Nine years of being the one who is fine. She is on two lists. People text her when things go wrong at eleven at night, and she answers, and she is glad to. She has been called strong in this building more times than she has been called by her own name, and every time somebody says it a small part of her steps back and goes quiet, because they are describing a woman she built, carefully, out of good materials, and she has kept her in excellent condition.

And then there is the thing.

It has a date on it. It has a room in it, and a smell, and a particular sound a door made. It is not enormous in the way disasters are enormous, and it is not the kind of thing that would make anybody in that next room drop their cup. It is just that she has never said it. Not once. Not to the woman with the laugh, not to anybody on either list, not in nine years, and by now the not saying has become its own object, heavier than the thing itself, and she carries them both.

Steam is coming off the urn. Somebody in the next room says her name in a sentence she cannot quite hear, and three people laugh warmly, and she stands at the sink with her hands in the water.

The woman at the well was not exposed

There is a woman in John's gospel who came to draw water at noon.

Nobody drew water at noon. You drew it in the cool of the morning, in company, with the other women, and the fact that she was there in the heat on her own is the first thing the story tells you about her life without saying a word about it. She had a thing too. Hers was known in her town, which is a different burden and not a lighter one.

Jesus was sitting on the well when she arrived. He asked her for a drink.

Read that again slowly, because everything is in it. He knew every single thing about her before she put the jar down. He knew the five husbands and the man she was living with and whatever the real story underneath all of that had been, and He opened His mouth and asked her for water. He went first. He put Himself in her debt before He said one word about her life.

And then when it all came out, look at what she does with it.

Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?John 4:29

She runs into the town she has been avoiding and uses He knows everything about me as the headline. That is not the sentence of a woman who has been exposed. Nobody advertises their own humiliation. That sentence is only possible because the knowing arrived wrapped in welcome, and she came out of that conversation lighter than she went into it.

You are already fully known by God, and you were on the day you decided you would never say it out loud. That is not a warning and it is not a threat. It is what John 4 puts in writing, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a written thing and makes it land in a kitchen instead of staying in a book.

You have His welcome tonight, and it is not being held back pending a disclosure from you. His word never once puts a condition like that on it, and the same Spirit who filled that room next door is standing at this sink with a woman whose hands are in the water.

Nobody in here is calling you a hypocrite

I want to be careful with the next part, because this is exactly where people get careless with a person like you.

You have not been lying to that building.

You have been doing what a person does when a room decided early who she was and has been pleased with the answer ever since. Somebody said she is so strong in your first year and it was kind and it was even true that week, and the room settled on it, and after a while the cost of correcting a room is higher than the cost of staying in the kitchen. That is not deceit. That is arithmetic done by somebody who was tired.

And the kitchen is not a lie either. The cups genuinely need washing. Two of the people in that next room genuinely would not have made it through last spring without you. Nothing you have done in nine years gets crossed out because there is a thing you never said.

You were not pretending in that kitchen, and you are not carrying a secret that God has to be told. Psalm 139:1 says He has searched you and known you, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes that a comfort in the body instead of a threat in the head.

And I am not going to tell you to go and tell somebody. That is not mine to hand you, it is not the price of anything here, and one more instruction is the last thing you need at half past nine with a tea towel over your shoulder. Whatever you do about that room is yours. You have a welcome that nothing you say can earn and nothing you have kept quiet can cancel. That is how His word describes it from beginning to end, and the Spirit who sealed you did not attach the seal to a confession made in a building.

The breakthrough

Here is what is actually in front of you. Four cups, an urn to switch off at the wall, a tea towel to hang over the rail, and a room to walk back through on your way to the door.

That is all. Not nine years and not the thing. Tonight.

You are welcome in that room exactly as you are, and it is already settled, and the thing you have never said has never once altered the settling. God settled it in His word at the cross and not in a conversation you have not had, and the Holy Spirit is the One who carries a settled thing across the distance between a kitchen and a doorway.

You are known and kept at the same time, and it is yours right now, with your hands in the water. That is what is written, and the Spirit is the One who makes being fully known stop feeling like a risk and start feeling like a place to stand.

You can carry it back out through that room tonight, unsaid, and be entirely at home there. Not because it does not matter. Because the One whose welcome the room runs on already has the whole of it and has not moved.

Declare this over yourself

Say these under the noise of the urn. You are not working up nerve for anything. The authority in them is not yours by effort: it is Christ's, and you are in Christ, so it has been given to you the way a seat at a table is given to family. What happens in that next room is His, and however He answers, His welcome was settled long before tonight.

  1. Kitchen with the urn still steaming, you are not the place I have to hide. John 4:29 says He told her all things and she came back running, and I am standing in the light of that in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that being known costs me the welcome, you have no ground under you. God had the whole of it before I ever walked into this building and His word has not moved an inch, and I put you out of this kitchen in the name of Jesus.
  3. Lord, You are the God who told her everything and stayed, and Your word makes Your welcome answer to Your kindness and never to my telling, so I am finishing these cups as a woman who is fully known. Your Spirit is standing at this sink with me, and I am not hiding from You in here.
