Three Minutes and a Locked Door

This message is for to be called by her own name in the locked cubicle at work where she goes for three minutes to get her face back

Down the corridor past the photocopier there is a door with a plate on it that says STAFF, and behind that door is a small room with two cubicles, a hand dryer that has not worked since spring, and a panel of frosted glass at the end that turns the whole afternoon the color of weak tea.

She is in the second cubicle with the lid down and her bag on her knees. She has been in here one minute and ten seconds. She has three.

Three is the number. Under three and it does not work. Over four and somebody notices, and somebody noticing is worse than anything that happens in here.

She has just come out of an hour with a family being moved out of an apartment they have lived in for nine years, and for that hour she was the calmest person in the room, which is her job and which she is extraordinarily good at. She held the mother's hand at one point. She found the little boy a cup of water and a chair that spins, which was the only good thing that happened to him all afternoon. She said the true things in the order that made them possible to hear.

Then she said, "I'll see you Thursday," and stood up, and walked them to the door, and smiled at the next person waiting and said "two minutes," and came down the corridor past the photocopier.

Now she is sitting on a closed lid under a hand dryer that does not work, doing the thing she does. It has a shape. First the breath, which is not deliberate, it just comes out longer than usual, and something in her shoulders drops half an inch. Then, for about forty seconds, nothing at all, which is the part she could never explain to anybody. Then she puts her face back on.

Not a fake face. Understand that, because she does not. She has never lied to a single person in that building. It is more like a coat you put on to go outside: warm, well made, fits her, and everybody in that office genuinely likes the person wearing it, including her.

Two minutes ten. She checks her phone. Eleven messages, none urgent. She puts it away.

And in the last thirty seconds the sentence arrives, the one that only ever arrives in here, and it is not a complaint and it is not even sad. It is a small flat observation from somewhere underneath everything.

Nobody in this building knows my name is not "the one who is good with the difficult ones."

She lifts the door with her knee, the way the sticking lock needs, turns it, and goes back out into the corridor.

You know that room. Yours might be a stairwell, or a stockroom, or a parked car with the door shut, or four minutes in the shower with the water running. And before anything else, I want to be clear with you: I am not here to tell you the coat is a lie, and I am not going to ask you to go and be honest with somebody about it. It is not a lie. I came in here to say your name.

He Says the Name Before He Says Anything Else

You are safe here, so let me put the text down gently and then say what it is doing.

Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.Isaiah 43:1

That is spoken to a people with water and fire ahead of them, and look at the order. Before a single instruction, before anything about how to hold up, He identifies them. And not by their function. Israel had a role, a reputation, a job description running back to a promise made to Abraham. None of that is what He reaches for. I have called you by name.

Look at the whole opening if you have a minute, because the sentence just before it uses two names, and one of them is the old one. He who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel. Israel is the name he was given after the fight at the river. Jacob is what his mother called him. God uses both. He has not tidied away the name from before the reputation, because He was not embarrassed by it and He is not now.

You are called by your own name by God, and He has never once addressed you as the role. That is not a warm thought I am offering you on a closed lid; it is what is written in Isaiah 43:1, where the naming comes before the instruction and not after it, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a name off a page and says it inside a locked room with a hand dryer that does not work. In that corridor you are the one who is good with the difficult ones. In here He is not using that.

Now let me deal with the coat, because you are braced for me to take it off you.

I am not going to call it pretending. The face you put back on at two minutes ten is not a performance in the shabby sense of that word, and anybody who tells you it is has never had to walk out of a room like the one you just walked out of and smile at the next person. It is load bearing. It is how a mother gets held on to at the worst hour of her year by somebody whose hands are steady. What it costs you is real, and the cost is not a moral failing either. Both things are true at once and I am not going to collapse them into one for the sake of a neat paragraph.

You are known underneath the coat, and you were known there long before you ever needed one. Scripture says He formed you and called you by name, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that specific rather than general, so that the person He is holding in this small room is the one nobody in the building has met. Nothing about you had to be uncovered for Him to know it. He was never on the outside of it.

Redeemed Is a Word About Price, Not Performance

There is a word in that verse that everybody skims, and it is doing more work than the rest of the sentence put together. I have redeemed you.

Redemption in Israel was not a feeling. It was a legal transaction with a named person in it. When a family lost land, or a member of it lost their freedom, the nearest relative could come and buy it back, and the word for him is the one translated redeemer. Boaz does exactly this for Ruth, and Leviticus builds a whole jubilee around it: what belongs in the family comes back, because somebody with the right to do it pays.

Which means value here is set by the price, not by the output. That is how prices work. A thing is worth what was paid for it, and nothing that happens on a Tuesday adjusts the figure. So when God says I have redeemed you, I have called you by name, you are mine, He is not describing a person's usefulness. He is describing a price already paid, and then a belonging.

You have been bought back, and the price was set on you rather than on what you produce in an hour with a family. It is written that He redeemed you and called you by name, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a legal fact and makes it a floor under a woman on a closed lid at two minutes twenty. The calm you carried into that room came out of you at cost. It did not buy you anything, because you were already paid for.

Let me be careful about how much I hand you, because this is where a message like this overreaches.

I am not going to tell you what to do about the job, or say anything about next month, or whether any of this gets easier. I do not know, and if I invented it you would smell it. What I have is the rest of this afternoon: the person waiting outside with two minutes' worth of patience, the phone, the walk to the car at the end.

You have the rest of this afternoon, and it is genuinely covered. His word says fear not, for I have redeemed you, and it is the Holy Spirit who supplies a redeemed person in real time rather than in principle, in a corridor, past a photocopier, with a coat on. What comes after this afternoon belongs to Him and I will not put a date on Him.

The breakthrough

Here is the exchange, and it happens inside your three minutes rather than instead of them.

Nothing about the corridor changes. The person waiting still gets the calm one, because the calm one is real and they need her. What changes is what the three minutes are for. They have been a repair: somewhere to go and put yourself back together well enough to be useful again, alone, on your own supply. From here they are something else. They are the room where you are addressed.

You are held for the rest of this shift by the God who redeemed you and calls you by name, and that is already written rather than something you now have to arrange. It is written, I have called you by name, you are mine, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries a sentence like that off a scroll and into a small room with a frosted window. I cannot tell you what Thursday looks like for that family, and I will not promise you what Scripture does not. What I can tell you is who is in here at one minute ten.

Declare this over yourself

Say these three out loud, quietly, and let me tell you why you may. Speaking to what stands in your way is not theatrics; the authority is Christ's and it has been given to you, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you. The mountain here is not the family, the office or anybody in that building, and I would never have you speak against one. It is the flat little verdict that arrived in the last thirty seconds. What happens after today is His timing and His to decide, and you leave the outcome with Him. Your name is not in question.

  1. Second cubicle with the lid down, you are not where I go to become nobody. Isaiah 43:1 says I have been called by my own name, and the One who says it is already in here at one minute ten.
  2. Verdict that I am only the job, you have been in this room longer than I have and you have no right to stay, and in the name of Jesus you go out through that door ahead of me. His word says I have been redeemed and called by name, and it is His Spirit who says that name where nobody else can hear it.
  3. Lord, You are the One who calls me by the name my mother used, and You have never once called me by the role. I thank You that You redeemed me before I was good at anything, and I am saying my own name out loud in here and walking back out on Yours.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
