The boots are on the mat where he set them last night, toes to the wall, laces loose the way he always leaves them, and at seven forty this morning there was a bar of light lying across the left one.
By ten the light had moved onto the floorboards. By one it was up the leg of the table. At four it was on the far wall, going orange, and the boots had not moved at all.
He had a list. He always has a list. The gutter on the north side that has been holding water since the storm. The trailer lights, which he needs before he can haul anything for anybody. A run to the lumberyard, forty minutes each way, and he had the measurements written on the back of an envelope by the toaster.
He sat down in the kitchen chair with his coffee at about seven and he never got up.
Not asleep. Not sick in a way he could name if somebody asked. He sat there with a cooling mug and he heard the dog want out and he let the dog out and he sat back down. He heard the mail. He heard a truck go by that he recognized by the sound of it. Somewhere around noon he ate two slices of bread standing at the counter, and then he sat back down, and the light kept going across the room the way it does whether anybody uses the day or not.
And the whole time, underneath, the sentence was running.
He has been saying it to himself since about nine. It is short and it has one word in it that he would never say to another living person, and he has said it to himself maybe two hundred times today. He is not depressed, he would tell you. He is not lazy, he would tell you, and then he would look at the boots.
That is the part that is actually costing him. Not the gutter. The gutter can wait a week and he knows it. What is costing him is the ruling he has been handing down on himself all day in an empty kitchen, and the fact that the ruling gets a little more evidence every hour the light moves.
You know that chair. Maybe it is a bed you did not get out of, or a car you sat in outside work for forty minutes, or a phone you did not answer four times. The work did not get done, and you have been calling yourself something ever since, and you would not let anybody speak to a person you love the way you have spoken to yourself since nine o'clock this morning.
I am not going to tell you how to salvage the day. I am going to tell you what the twenty-third Psalm actually says about lying down, because it is not what you have always heard.
The sheep did not decide to lie down
He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.Psalm 23:2
Look at the verb, because everybody quotes this psalm and almost nobody reads that verb.
In Hebrew it is causative. Yarbitseni. He causes me to lie down. He makes me lie down. It is not the sheep choosing a good spot after a productive morning, and it is not the sheep being scolded into resting. It is the Shepherd's own action, done to the sheep, and the sheep's part in the sentence is entirely passive. The grammar puts the lying down on Him.
Which means a psalm every frightened person in the world has memorized opens its second line by taking a whole category of thing off your record and putting it on His.
You are lain down by the Shepherd Himself, and that is His action and not your failure. I am not softening the day for you. It is what is written in Psalm 23:2 in the tense the Hebrew has it, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a causative verb and lays it across a kitchen chair at four in the afternoon. The boots did not move. That is a fact about a morning. It is not a fact about a man.
And here is what the psalm does next, which I want you to see. It does not explain the lying down. It does not tell the sheep what the lying down was for, or what lesson was in it, or how to avoid needing it next time. It just says green pastures and still waters, and moves on. There is no audit in that verse. The Shepherd is not building a case.
You have a Shepherd who has not once written this day down against you. His word says He restores the soul, and it says it right after the lying down and not before it, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes that order matter to a man who has been sentencing himself since nine. Restoration comes after the ground, not after the performance.
Let me say one plain thing here and then leave it, because it belongs in this message and it is not a detour. If this has been most mornings for weeks rather than this one morning, please tell your doctor. That is not a spiritual failure and going is not a retreat; it is the same wisdom that puts a splint on an arm. Bodies wear out and carry things, and the God who made yours is not offended by a person getting help with it.
The name you have been calling yourself all day
Now the other half, and this is the part I actually came for.
There is a difference between a day that did not happen and a person who is a failure, and somewhere around nine o'clock this morning that difference collapsed in your kitchen. It usually does. A day is easy to see and a self is not, so the mind reaches for the day and reads it as evidence, and by noon you are not looking at a gutter anymore, you are looking at a verdict.
But look at who was doing the talking. Not the Shepherd. Nowhere in that psalm, nowhere in the whole of Scripture, does God stand over a person who has run out and read them a charge sheet. That voice in the kitchen was not His and I want you to know whose it was not, at least.
You were never on trial in that chair, and the case you have been building against yourself all day has no right to stay. Psalm 23:2 hands a tired creature green grass rather than a charge, and His Spirit is the One who tells a person the difference between conviction, which is specific and kind and always comes with a door, and this thing that has just been grinding at you in an empty room for seven hours.
And notice something else about that verse. Green pastures and still waters are not rewards. The sheep did not earn the grass by being a productive sheep. The grass was already there, chosen by somebody who walked the ground ahead of time and knew where the good feed was, and the sheep's whole part in the arrangement is to be where it is put.
You are lying in ground that was picked out for you before this morning started. That is what is written, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes the word pasture and makes it a real floor under a real day that went nowhere. You did not choose it. It was chosen.
Here is the turn, and it is not a plan and it is not a fresh start at five o'clock.
The strength being handed to you is not for the list. The gutter is not in this. The lumberyard is not in this, and neither is tomorrow, and I am not going to widen this out into your week, because your week is not what you are in. You are in one late afternoon, in a chair, with a name you have been calling yourself.
What is being handed to you is enough for the rest of this afternoon, and one thing only: to stop prosecuting the man in the chair.
You are held right now by the Shepherd who chose this ground, and this hour is yours to receive rather than to redeem. It is written that He makes His own lie down and He leads them by quiet water, and the Holy Spirit is the One who applies that to a specific kitchen on a specific day that did not go. Whether the boots move tonight is His and not mine to promise, and you can leave the outcome with Him. What is settled is who has been in the room since seven forty.
Declare this over yourself
Say these three out loud from the chair, and let me tell you why you may. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing did not depend on the morning going well; it is where you live, and it is what gives a person the right to speak to a thing that has been sitting on them. What you are speaking to is not your body and it is not this day. It is the name you have been calling yourself since nine o'clock. What tomorrow holds is His to decide and you leave the outcome with Him. Who has been holding you since seven forty is not in question.
- Boots by the back door that did not move, you are not a verdict and you never had the standing to be one. Scripture says the Shepherd is the One who makes me lie down, and He has not lost track of this morning.
- Name I have been calling myself, you have run in this kitchen for seven hours and you were never spoken over me by God, and in the name of Jesus you go quiet. The written word gives me green pasture instead of a charge sheet, and I am sitting here receiving it.
- Lord, You are the Shepherd who picked this ground before the light came through the window, and You have been in this room the whole day. You make me lie down, and I am not going to argue with You about it, and my hand is on my chest and I am staying still.
