The Dog Got Fed

The kitchen at four in the afternoon looks exactly the way it looked at eight in the morning, and Alma is standing in the doorway of it with her coat still on from the mail.

There is the cereal bowl in the sink with the ring dried in it. There is the pan on the back burner from Sunday. There is the pile of envelopes on the end of the table, and the one on top is the one she has been meaning to open since a week ago Tuesday, and it has moved about four inches in that week because she keeps setting other things down on it and taking them off again. The chair is pulled out. The clock over the stove is the only thing in the room that has done its job.

She got up at eight. She sat on the edge of the bed for a while. She came down.

And then somewhere between the bottom stair and the kettle, the day went. Not in any way she could describe to a person. She was not doing something else. She has no idea, honestly, what happened between nine and one, only that when she looked up the light had moved from the window over the sink onto the doorframe, which is a thing it does around one o'clock in this house at this time of year.

She fed the dog.

That is the whole of it. Somewhere in there the old collie came and stood by the pantry door and looked at her with the patience they get, and she got the bag out and filled the bowl and put it down on the floor by the mat, and the dog ate, and that is the one thing that got done today.

The bowl is empty now. It is on the mat. The collie is asleep against the warm bit of the floor where the pipe runs under.

Alma stands in the door with her coat on and looks at the room, and what goes through her is not tiredness. She has been tired plenty and she knows the shape of it. This is the other thing. It is the running total, and it says: eleven days now. And then it says the sentence she is not able to argue with at four in the afternoon in a kitchen where nothing has moved.

Whatever I used to be, I am not that.

The light is on the doorframe. The collie's foot twitches in her sleep. And the bowl on the mat is the one clean thing in the room, because it got emptied.

The bread came down for one day

In the wilderness the arrangement was very plain and it has been dressed up ever since.

Every morning there was bread on the ground. Every morning it had to be picked up. And the instruction, which is the whole thing, is that a person gathered a portion for that day. Not for the week. Not for the month. Anything held back overnight went bad in the pot by morning, and the text says so bluntly, and God did not apologize for the arrangement or offer a better one.

Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day.Exodus 16:4

A certain rate every day. That is the size of the provision, and it is also the size of the demand, and they are the same size on purpose. Nobody in that camp was ever handed a month. Nobody was expected to run on last Thursday's portion.

You are inside a daily arrangement, not a weekly one. That is not a comforting spin, it is exactly what is written in Exodus 16:4, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a wilderness rule and lays it down in a kitchen at four in the afternoon. The day that came down for Alma this morning was a day. It was not eleven days, and it was not the version of her from two years ago.

And here is a plain thing, said once and without any drama in it. If this has been most mornings for weeks rather than this one morning, tell your doctor. That is not a spiritual failure and going is not a retreat. Bodies run down for reasons that live in the body, and God made the body, and there is no part of Scripture that treats a physician as an enemy of faith.

You have not been graded on this kitchen. The written word never once measures a person by what is left in the sink, and the same Spirit who inspired Exodus 16 is not standing in the doorway with a clipboard behind a tired woman in her coat.

What the story does with a man who could not get up

There is a prophet in 1 Kings who had just come off the biggest day of his working life, and about a day and a half later he was lying under a bush in the desert asking to die.

Look at what happens next, because it is the most practical passage in the Bible and almost nobody preaches it. There is no rebuke. There is no sermon about what he ought to be able to handle after a day like that. An angel comes and bakes him a cake on hot stones and gives him water, and lets him sleep. Then the angel comes back and does it again, and the second time says only that the journey is too great for him.

That is Heaven's assessment of a man flat on the ground: he needs food and he needs sleep, twice, before anybody says another word to him. The theology comes forty days later. The bread comes first.

You are being met the same way he was met. That is what is written in that chapter, plainly, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a story about a prophet under a juniper tree and makes it an actual account of what God does with a person who cannot get up.

Nobody in that story treats his collapse as a lesson. It is not interpreted. It is fed.

And what Alma did today, without knowing she was doing it, was the same shape. A creature came and stood by the pantry door and needed something, and she got up and gave it, and the bowl on the mat is the evidence. You were the one who filled that bowl, and God saw it. Scripture says a cup of cold water given does not go unnoticed, and the same Spirit who put that line in the gospel is not running a different ledger for the eleventh day of a hard stretch.
