Strength For Today1 Kings 19:7

The Glass of Water on the Bedside Table

This message is for the father lying on his side on a school morning, listening to his daughter do her own plait downstairs because he has not come down, who cannot make his feet reach the floor and has already decided what that says about him, and who needs to be met in the bed rather than got out of it

Downstairs, his daughter is doing her own plait, and he can tell from the sound of it that she is doing it badly.

He knows that sound the way he knows every sound in the house, because he is the one who has always been up first. The kettle, the cereal cupboard, the school shoes on the mat. She is eleven and she has never once had to make her own breakfast on a school day, and she is making it now, quietly, and she has not called up the stairs, and that is worse than if she had. She is being kind to him. She is eleven and she is being kind to him.

He is lying on his side, facing the wall, and the first thing will not happen. He has been telling his feet to reach the floor for the length of two songs on the radio she has put on low. Nothing is wrong with his legs. That is what makes it unbearable. There is a glass of water on the bedside table from last night, a shirt on the chair, his phone face down with the group chat in it for the Tuesday lift he was going to do, and every one of those things is asking him a small question and he has no answer to any of them.

He is the one people ring. He is the one who drives, and holds the ladder, and says leave it with me. He has been quietly working out, in the time it takes to lie still, what this says about him, and the sentence he has arrived at is not one he would say to anyone else in the world.

You know the sentence. You are lying in it. This morning you could not make yourself do the first thing, and it was not the whole day that beat you, it was the first thing, the smallest thing, and everything you have ever believed about yourself is standing at the end of the bed with its arms folded. So let me come and sit on the edge of it, and let me say the one thing before anything else. I am not here to get you up. Nobody on this page is going to tell you to be strong. I want to show you what God did with a man He found lying down.

What God sent to the man under the tree

The pit first, and honestly. This is not the kind of tired a nap fixes. There is nothing left in the tank and the gauge has been reading empty for longer than has been said out loud, and this morning the engine did the honest thing and did not turn over. And the worst part is not the bed. It is the verdict. The one that says a person of faith, a person others lean on, a grown adult with a daughter downstairs, does not lie here. So the emptiness became evidence, and it has been read against you since the radio came on.

Now come with me to a broom tree in the wilderness, because Scripture has a man in exactly this position, and he is not a small man in the story. He is Elijah, the day after the greatest public victory of his life, and he has walked into the desert and lain down under a bush and told God he cannot go on.

And the angel of the Lord came again a second time and touched him and said, "Arise and eat, for the journey is too great for you."1 Kings 19:7

Read what God did not do. He did not send a word of correction. He did not remind Elijah of yesterday. He did not ask him what this said about his calling. He sent a touch, and a small cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water at his head, and He let him go back to sleep. Then He did it again. Twice, God's whole response to His prophet lying in the dust was food and sleep and a hand on his shoulder, and one sentence, and the sentence was not be strong. It was: the journey is too great for you. God agreed with him. He said, out loud, that it was too much, and then He fed him.

You are met in the bed this morning by that same God, and this is not a warm thought of mine, it is written down and it is the pattern of how He deals with the emptied. His Spirit does not stand at the end of the bed with folded arms; He comes to the side of it. That is the position He took with Elijah and it is the position He takes with you.

He has not moved back from the bed

Let me tell you the first rule of the shelter I keep, because it is the same rule as this page. When somebody arrives at the door with nothing left, the first morning nobody wakes them. Nobody asks what the plan is. If they do not come down, somebody takes a cup of tea up and leaves it, and says nothing about the hour. Because I have watched what happens to a person who is measured on the morning they could not get up, and I have watched what happens to a person who is met on it, and only one of them is still in the house a week later.

You have a Father who knows your frame and remembers that you are dust; that is Psalm 103, not my opinion, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it more than a line on a page. Knowing your frame means He is not surprised by this morning. He built the frame. He knows what it is made of and what it can carry and what it cannot, and He did not forget any of that between last night and now. The verdict standing at the end of the bed did not come from Him. He is not the one holding the clipboard.

And hear the shape of the strength this site is about, because it is not the strength you have been asked for all your life. Paul, who did more than most people ever will, was told by the Lord: My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). Made perfect in it. Not despite it. Not once you have got past it. Inside it. Which means the morning you cannot get up is not the morning God's strength has left. It is the morning it has the least of yours to compete with.

So here is what is true, and it is written: you were never asked to produce the strength for today, and His Spirit is the one carrying you through this hour, this one, on the pillow, in the smell of your daughter's toast. He is here on a day you cannot function. He has not moved back from the bed. He is not waiting on the landing for you to sort yourself out. He is nearer to you lying down than the verdict is.

Now let me say the plain thing, and I say it as somebody who keeps a door, not as somebody handing you a task. If mornings like this are becoming most mornings, or you have stopped eating and sleeping in the ordinary way, or the sentence you arrived at in the dark is heavier than I am guessing at, then today is a day to say so to a person. Your doctor. Somebody who loves you. And if the sentence sounds anything like the one Elijah said under that tree, that you would rather it stopped, please do not carry it alone for another hour: ring a crisis line where you live, or 988 if you are in the United States, and tell one person in your life today. That is not you failing to have faith. God sent Elijah a messenger with bread. Sometimes the messenger has a stethoscope, and He is in that too.

The breakthrough

Nothing here is going to lift you out of the bed, and I want to be honest about that so you do not read this to the end waiting for the push. There is no push. There is a touch on the shoulder, and a small thing within reach, and the true sentence: the journey is too great for you, and I know it, and I am here.

You are not failing this morning. That is not encouragement; it is the written word of a God who found His prophet face down and fed him without one syllable of rebuke, and the same Spirit who touched Elijah is the one at the side of your bed. Failure would need a standard you were supposed to reach, and the only standard in this room is the one you invented in the dark. He did not set it. He is not grading against it. He is asking for nothing today except that you let Him be near while you cannot.

Strength for today is not a tank you have to fill. It is a cake at your head and a hand on your shoulder, and it is sized to one hour, and then to the next one, and no further. Whatever this afternoon holds, He is in it before you get there.

Declare this over yourself

Speak these lying down. You have standing to say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and being in Him was never a strength grade; the man face down under the tree was as much God's as the man on the mountain the day before. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it, so a voice that has nothing left is enough voice. And however He answers, whether you are up by lunchtime or you are still here at four, His timing is His own and neither one is a mark against you. He is here on a day you cannot function. Say so.

  1. Feet that would not reach the floor, you are not a verdict on me and you are not evidence against my faith. It is written that God knows my frame and remembers I am dust, and He did not forget it between last night and this morning.
  2. Sentence I wrote in the dark about myself, you were written by me and not by God, and I hand you back in the name of Jesus. Scripture says His strength is made perfect in weakness, and His Spirit is nearer to me lying down than you are.
  3. Lord, You are here at the side of the bed and You have not moved back from it, exactly as You came to Elijah with bread and a hand on his shoulder. I thank You, because Your Spirit is the strength for this one hour and not for the whole road, and I am drinking the water on the bedside table, and that is enough for today.
